I was born in SÃ £o Paulo, Brazil, where I lived until age 13, when my parents were transferred to Miami, FL. Family was always a significant part of my life; every other weekend we would gather at the beach, play soccer and cook amazing Brazilian barbecue together. From these experiences I have learned to value family and that unique bond we share. What did you decide to study, and why? Since I was a kid, I was always interested in science and math. My grandfather, a Math professor at SÃ £o Paulo University, guided me since I was very young, giving me puzzles and telling me stories about how things work, how the planets orbit the sun and the physics of stars. From that, I developed an even greater passion for understanding the physical world, which led me to pursue an undergraduate double major in Applied Mathematics and Physics, and currently a Ph.D in Applied Mathematics. What are you up to now? How did you decide to pursue this? I am currently on my fourth year as a Ph.D. candidate at MIT. I have always wanted to work in the academic world, especially to teach and inspire others. I want to contribute to the world of education, and I felt that there was no better way to explore that than to work for a Ph.D. at such an academically challenging place like MIT. I have looked for a variety of teaching positions, which has led me to be a Teacher Assistant for the Complex Variables course for two consecutive semesters, the instructor for Calculus 1 for the last two springs, and a Kaufman Teaching Certificate Program instructor last summer, where I taught incoming graduate students and post-docs how to incorporate educational research into their teaching. What do you imagine your life will look like in 5-10 years? I imagine myself working in the area of education, preferably teaching at a higher learning institution. I can also see myself working on online education tools, trying to bring opportunities to those with less means by providing free quality educational material to everyone. What’s the most memorable thing a student has ever said to you? Once I had a student come to me after class and say: "Don't take our quietness in class for poor teaching; you are actually helping us so much!" This phrase has been with me for the last few years; at some places, such as MIT, bright students sometimes face a dilemma when it comes to answering questions: if a question is too easy and the student gets it correct, there is no reward. However, if the student gets it wrong, they feel a sense of shame that is new to them. Therefore, participation in class may drop because of this. I have since tried to encourage collaboration and group work in class, to show them that it is ok to not know something. Most of the time when they are confused by a topic, so are their peers! Interacting with one another without the public pressure makes the learning environment more tolerant and less judgmental, and I hope that I help my students understand that. Describe your perfect weekend morning. Some will cringe at this, but I am a morning person, even on weekends! I like to wake up early, make my own waffles or pancakes, and if the weather allows go kayaking on the Charles. What’s the best gift you’ve ever received or given? I sincerely believe that the best gifts are experiences, rather than objects. Since I am passionate about food and trying new and elaborate dishes, the best gift I have ever received was a trip to New York with a reservation to one of the best restaurants in the world! One theme which ran throughout the book was Rubashovs actions that were taken as matters of self-preservation and what he must do to atone for them. ;#9;The first instance of this was on page 45 where he asked if it is necessary to pay for deeds that were necessary and right. This was brought on by Rubashovs attempt and his witnessing of his neighbors attempt on his behalf. More is said about this during Rubashovs first journal entry on page 80. Here he attempts to explain the logic behind the partys eradication of thought that goes against party doctrine. During this entry Rubashov makes no attempt but rather feels that everything shall be sorted out by history. The pain felt by Rubashov over this decision was amplified by his witnessing his old friend being ta ken much the same way as Avolora. ;#9;After finishing this book I was amazed at how I did not feel any type of dislike towards Rubashov. He was someone who allowed others to take falls which were meant for him, this even included some people he cared about. This being one of the characteristics which I despise most in a person, I tried to think upon what it was that made this trait bearable in Rubashov when in so many others it would cause such a great wealth of personal dislike. Upon further reflection I came to the realization that I would not have liked the younger Rubashov very much at all, but fortunately Darkness at Noon was not about a middle aged man accumulating debts, owed to the innocent citizens that got caught in his path of rampant destruction, but of an old man who is living out the result of a life that was reasoned out through logic too much, with not enough time spent concerning himself with the individual. ;#9;Through the journal we can see that Rubashov is changi ng not just because of the way he answers questions but also by the questions that he asks. He at last feels the true pain, which his actions have caused. And probably for the first time, although this was not stated in the book, he feels regret. This is probably a first for him because up till now he has always felt that there was a logical justification for his actions and that feeling bad about things which are necessary is illogical. This view and stance could be easily defended and is not far from my own, but Rubashov never regrets the harm that he bestows on others. And it is in this time of despair when he should finally asks for forgiveness but rather he somewhere deep within himself felt a need to pay for the suffering that his actions have caused. ;#9;This was the story of a man who through his guise of logic and care for the people, was able to fool, not only the characters in the book and most of the readers but also himself, into thinking that he acted out of the benefit of the greater good. This being true even though at the end he realized that much of his actions were going to be seen as monstrous to many in the future. That he had no longer the desire to continue this charade is the one thing that keeps him from becoming not just a monster for what he had done, but also for his intent. Although it claims that they are providing quality and long lasting clothing, the price is a little bit higher considering their target consumers. Because the young adults usually can’t be independence of finance. However the young people often buy things on their instincts rather than rationality. So the high price may not be an obstacle of purchasing as long as they firmly believe the messages that AF is trying to imply (having AF clothing and being attractive and beautiful). Moreover the price represents not only their products but also their brand. AF puts itself at a high level of fashion. It makes the consumers strive for it instead of earning them. However there are 301 stores in the US and most of other countries only have one or two stores in their capital or booming city. In the USA, AF build their store along the coast more than in the middle because of the economics. Choosing the main cities to build stores can provide more customers because they pay more attention on dressing than small cities. People who live in big city can also have more purchasing power. Mike Rose's Lives on the Boundary Mike Rose’s Lives on the Boundary is an Educational Autobiography. The book begins at the beginning of his life and we follow him up into his adult years. The book focuses on the â€Å"struggles and achievements of America’s educationally underprepared† . The Alien   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In order to understand Mike Rose, and his book Lives on the Boundary, you must first understand where Mike is coming from and examine his past. Mike was born to a first generation immigrant family, originally from Italy. He spent his early childhood in the mid-west and then in his latter childhood, parents not knowing any better, in East Los Angeles. Mike’s father suffered from arteriosclerosis. Neither Mike’s mother nor his father had completed high school and no one in his family had ever attended college. This is the setting, background, and characters of Mike’s tale of â€Å"struggles and achievements of America’s educationally underprepared† . Through this book Mike constantly is emphasizing three main themes. First, the importance of an educational mentor; later in this treatise we will examine several of Mike’s mentors. Second, social injustices in the American education system; specifically the lack of funding and bureaucracy’s affect on the public educational system. Third and lastly, specific teaching methods that Mike has used to reach out to kids on the boundary.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Throughout Mike’s life, he had the fortunate experience of having some inspirational mentors. I have identified four of his numerous mentors as the most critical to his development, both educationally and personally. Achieving Abnormality The first of Mike’s mentors I would like to discuss came into his life just after his father passed away, beginning of his senior year. His name was Jack MacFarland. Jack, as described by Mike Rose is, †¦a beatnik who was born too late. His teeth were stained, he tucked his sorry tie between the third and forth buttons of his shirt, and his pants were chronically wrinkled. With a cultural background like Mike’s, survival in the American educational system is a difficult struggle at best. However, Jack helped fill in some of the critical cultural blanks. â€Å"He slowly and carefully built up our knowledge of Western intellectual history – with facts, with connections, with speculations† . And Jack served as more than simply a source of numb... ...t seems that every-other president and every-other governor refers to himself or herself as the education president or education governor, yet they fail to deliver the necessary funding to maintain a high level of education for all of his or her constituents’ children. Why is it that class and culture is the determining factor for who receives a quality education, this social injustice must be remedied. My Awakening Much like Mike, I have had some amazing academic mentors that were not afraid to get down in the trenches with me and ask what I was trying to say. I had Ms. Lewis my freshmen year of high school, she would sit down with me and rip apart my paper and rework it as necessary. During my senior year of high school, I had the privilege of taking a U.W. English class that was a seminar format where the instructor would frequently conference with us, and he gave me the tools to continue my education. However, something we all need to remember, especially at PLU, is to not be afraid to be a mentor to someone else. In life, we are all teachers. We tell one another our stories, and by doing that we are teaching them what it is like to look at the world through our lens.
